Sex Eyes
‘Sex Eyes’ was originally seedy, with reddened eyes showing a laser-like focus when sex is within sight. It had a tunnel vision seriousness to it, like that of a hunter looking for its prey.
It evolved; seeing a woman’s breasts, and at that moment, I saw them as eyes. Seedy to serene and sublime!
What percentage of us is the primal animal? And which is just conditioned to numb our feelings and impulses to live in society and fit in?
In many ways, it’s helpful that we can numb ourselves enough not to act out on every impulse. We’re the most developed animal, and we can be self-aware. But how much of that self-awareness comes from intuition and how much comes from society?
Intuitively, we can “read the room” and know when it’s acceptable to act on an impulse or not. These impulses don’t even need to be applicable to sexuality. What about all the times you like someone’s outfit or energy, and you want to tell them, but you don’t? What about times you feel an injustice but you stay silent because it’s a safer thing to do and more socially acceptable?
We hold ourselves back, almost all the time. In some ways, it’s helpful, but in others, it’s really not.
What if we really said what we thought and acted on our impulses?
(There’s a great book on the subject of when to use the truth; Lying by Sam Harris; I’d very much recommend this).
Humans have travelled very far from their animalistic, primal roots, yet our deep-seated need and desire to procreate and reproduce will not be vanishing anytime soon.
‘Sex Eyes’ is a reminder of how much of our needs are numbed to fit in. ‘Sex Eyes’ shows that intense, animalistic part of our personality, that lives in each of us. The final sketch — the one you see before you is a more subtle, delightful image! A homage to the beauty we see and the beauty within.
