The Rise And Fall

“Life is found between your deepest desire and your greatest fear” — Tony Robbins

What happens when you get engulfed in the middle turbulence?

This week, something pretty incredible happened. I hung up one of the largest sizes available of ‘The Rise’ in my gym! We, it’s not my gym; it’s the gym that I’ve been going to for the last 6 months.

Exercise is not something that evades me easily; it has been my saving grace through life and addiction. I’ve done the IronMan, the London Marathon (smoked 3 cigarettes before I started), I used to race mountain bikes. I’ve even tried Brazilian Jujitsu, but couldn’t quite get on with that one. Exercise has been something that’s saved me, helped me and guided me. It’s been my biggest release and at times my biggest fear, but it’s always been worth it.

The gym I am at now does 50-minute classes, with weights and cardio. No brain power is required, you just have to turn up; and not leave! At the end of this, you are fitter in the body, stronger, and a little more tired. It’s a time where you can just switch off and let your body take over. Even when your mind says ‘enough!’, you realise there’s something in your body that can take you further and train harder. Essentially, it teaches you that you’re far more powerful than your mind lets on.

Triptych:

The Rise is 1 meter wide and 1.5 meters tall! — It was originally a triptych — the colours that you see to the edges, trickled off on each side into another canvas. On the left more red, pain, On the right more green, blue and euphoria.

The flanking canvases, whilst beautiful, added nothing to the piece.

This piece is simple, it represents growth. Be this, physical, emotional, spiritual or mental. It’s not linear! Growth is so damn messy, but it’s simple too.

What you and I both probably have in common is that we’ve had to pull ourselves out from the depths. And I think, we all ‘imagine’ more serenity when we see the future.

“Suffering can only be found in your memory or your imagination” -Sadhguru

Life is no easy game, but there are some sure-fire ways to make it easier:

  • remove addictions
  • insert physical activity and mental practice.

The Rise helps me to visualise that ‘this too shall pass’ and gives me beautiful hope in difficult times. It helps me to connect back to myself.
